Dan Meyer's Watercolor Workshops offer an opportunity
for individuals to learn the art of watercolor
in a small personalized class environment.

  • Students experience a step by step procedure in
the various techniques of using watercolor.

  • Each class includes an explanation and demonstration of a particular technique followed by the student exercise.

  • Students receive personal attention.

The following is a basic overview of the curriculum
and instructional method Dan uses in his workshop classes.

Understand and produce basic watercolor techniques such as wet in wet, gradations and dry brush. Learn when to use these techniques to produce a particular effect on your painting.
See how color value can make a painting "pop" and learn the importance of a value sketch.

Begin by studying basic geometric shapes starting with the sphere. Learn how to make it appear round and then use that technique to render a more familiar round object such as an apple. You'll learn how to paint a mug or vase to make it appear cylindrical. We'll also study the cube, the basic shape for rendering structures from barns to skyscrapers.

Using what you have learned from studying the three basic shapes, you will develop and complete a still life painting.

Click MATERIAL LIST for a list of basic supplies. Also see
PALLET & BRUSHES for color placement and brush suggestions.

In the weeks that follow, you'll learn techniques used to paint trees and flowers, enjoy a creative experience painting rocks and paint grasses using the positive and negative methods.

At the close of the workshop, you will have enough techniques under your belt to comfortably begin creating watercolor paintings on your own.

The intermediate level is for those who have completed the beginner level or have had previous watercolor experience. Watercolor techniques learned at the beginner level are put to use in the creation of paintings. The subjects of the paintings vary but each has a specific goal, to improve your ability to manipulate watercolor. Whether we alter color shades and value to create a distant landscape or create a portrait using the glazing process, each painting will increase your knowledge of watercolor techniques.
