Artist
A biography of Dan Meyer along with a listing of recent as well as significant awards.
With over 30 years of art experience, Dan Meyer has been
interpreting his encounters with the avian wildlife of North America through the
use of transparent watercolor. His ability to capture the essence of his subject
is directly related to his emphasis on the use of values and the luminescent
quality of the medium.
Dan considers himself a watercolor purist, which means he chooses to avoid
opaque mediums and use only transparent color. Traditionally, watercolors are
painted light to dark. Therefore, his whites are the result of painting darker
colors around an area leaving the bare paper to fashion the white. It's this
challenge that inspires Dan to create new paintings with the same excitement and
enthusiasm as his very first watercolor painting.
The subjects
of the watercolor art shown here where all captured through sketches and
photography by the artist. In the case of wildlife, Dan is inspired by observing
the subject in it's natural environment. In his studio, he uses his reference to
create several sketches of his subjects in various positions. Dan then develops
a value sketch that contains all the elements of a good design.
In the case of a still life, he creates the design by physically arranging his
subject in a pleasing layout. When the images have been satisfactorily
transferred to the watercolor substrate and he has thought about his color
applications and values, he proceeds to render an image that he hopes will be
eye-catching and interesting to the viewer as well as self satisfying to the
artist.
A graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Dan work in the advertising and
packaging fields before deciding to pursue wildlife art full time. His
particular style of transparent watercolor captures the essence of North
American wildlife bringing enjoyment to outdoor enthusiasts and art collectors
across the country.
Dan is a charter member and past president of the Niagara Frontier Watercolor
Society and honorary member of the Central New York Watercolor Society.
